Chapter 8

I look down at my father. This... would not be a fun conversation. And honestly, I don’t think I want to have it. But... well, there is a lot he needs to answer for. And only some of it is personal. I sit down in front of him and flash him a wry smile.

He offers me a shaky, tired grin. “Hey, Freya...” he starts. “Before we get into this, can we talk? Have a moment, before the hunters out there ruin it? Again?”

He’s trying to lighten the conversation with a lighthearted tone. I... allow it. The tone is going to get dark and accusatory later, so it will be cruel to not allow that now. But, just because I let him set the tone of the conversation, doesn’t mean I’m going to let everything else he did go. So, I nod. Not sharply, but curtly.

He sits up straighter. “First, let me say... I’m sorry. I wasn’t as good of a father as I should have been. I let my ambition drive me, and it led me away from my children. I’m sorry. I don’t expect your forgiveness, and honestly, I wouldn’t take it if you offered it. I just want you to know that.”

That was about what I expected. I nod and let him continue.

“I know there’s no way to convince you to leave, like I tried with your brother earlier, but... I’d hoped you could tell me a little more about your life?” He grimaces. “There wasn’t a lot of ‘talking’ between me and Logan... he blamed me for a lot of things, rightfully so, but I’d hoped to get to know all of you before this whole thing ended.”

I mull the thought over for a moment... there weren’t a lot of reasons I shouldn’t, if I was being honest with myself. And, well soothsayer or not, I am a journalist, and I enjoy telling true stories. So, why not? We have a few hours before we get into the darker stuff.

“Alright.” I nod, and the hope and relief in his eyes is... not overwhelming, but it is a little much for me. I start with, well, what I could remember from just after he left. There is a lot to go over. And that isn’t counting the apocalypse.

“Two Horsemen?” He asks with wide, terrified eyes. “You had contact with two of the manifestations of pestilence and famine?!”

“Well, I only had contact with Phil, who was possessed by Pestilence, and Famine was entirely through a vision.”

“Regardless!” He slumps backwards into his chair. “It shouldn’t have happened...at all! I... I’m sorry, I don’t mean to sound accusatory, and I have no right to dictate your life, but Horsemen?”

I shrug. “It’s not like I had a ton of say in the matter.”

He runs a hand down his face. “It shouldn’t have been that way. Nothing turned out like it should have.”

That was as good a segue as I’ll ever get. “I know it’s uncomfortable, but we have to go through the interrogation now.
